BFCitC Unveils New Nike Kit for Girls’ Football Team at St. Joseph’s Primary School

On Friday 1st March, Burnley FC in the Community paid a visit to St. Joseph’s Primary School to present each girl in the football team with a Nike Football Kit. This initiative is part of a larger Premier League Primary Stars campaign in collaboration with Nike, allowing us to provide every Primary Stars Girls Team with their very own kit.

St. Joseph’s Primary School always described themselves as being an active, sporting school, but for many years, they followed the traditional pathway. The boys played football, and the girls played netball.

After the Lionesses won the Euros, there was a significant change at the school, and the girls started to take football by the reins.

They recruited a parent who volunteered as a coach and began regular training sessions, eventually participating in league matches. This was a huge turning point for the school, and more girls started to join the team. However, the girls arrived at games wearing the boys’ football kit, which didn’t feel right.

St Josephs were then given the opportunity to actually design and receive their very own kit!

The donation of the girls’ football kit from the Premier League Kit Scheme in partnership with Nike cannot be underestimated. This outward sign that girls’ football is a sport for girls in its own right and not ‘the girls playing the boys’ sport.’ The pride the girls felt upon being given this kit and wearing it is immeasurable!

One of the young girls, Amelia, told us, “I really like that we got to choose the kits and that we don’t have to share with the boys anymore,” and Olivia said, “We appreciate all the different support that Burnley gives us”.
