On Monday, Burnley FC in the Community held their third community iftar at Turf Moor. Funded by the Premier League Fans Fund. The event brought together over 200 people from Burnley and the surrounding areas.
Members of the community, including Islamic Relief, primary schools, and local leaders, gathered to celebrate Ramadan. Players from Burnley FC’s Academy also attended to learn more about Ramadan and break fast with the group!
Michael Colquhoun, Deputy CEO of Burnley FC in the Community, expressed his delight at the event’s return to Turf Moor. He said, “Burnley is a vibrant and diverse community, and as a charity, we are committed to being inclusive and supportive of all. This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our differences and learn from each other.”
“It’s really inspiring for the Club’s young academy players to learn and understand why their teammates are fasting. Experiencing these traditions firsthand helps them build respect and tolerance for each other.”
This year students from Heasandford Primary School and Barden Primary School joined the event. The students have been working with Nasheed exponent and TV and radio broadcaster, Hussnain Hanif, to learn a Nasheed. The project culminated in the children performing at the Community Iftar.
Hussnain shared, “We started with children who didn’t know what words like tempo, melody, and skill meant, and now, children of all different ages and abilities have come together to sing perfectly!”
Helen Gurman, CEO of Burnley FC in the Community, said, “The children were absolutely incredible. You could see how much effort they put into practicing and how important this project is to them. It was a joy to watch and the perfect addition to our iftar.”
