Burnley FC in the Community’s Football & Education Programme welcomed special guests from both the men’s and women’s first teams, delivering an unforgettable experience for aspiring young players at Nelson and Colne College.
Students enrolled on the programme had the unique opportunity to train and play in front of professional players, gaining invaluable insight into life in elite football while showcasing their own talent on the pitch.
Learning from the Pros
The day began with players observing training sessions led by our coaches, before stepping in to offer guidance, encouragement and hands-on coaching to the students. This was a unique opportunity for players to demonstrate their skills, determination and passion for the game in front of professional role models.
Off the field, selected students were invited into the college’s Sports Lab, where they connected with players in a more relaxed environment, enjoying games of darts, table tennis and FIFA, helping to build genuine connections beyond football.
The visit concluded with a Q&A session, giving students a rare opportunity to hear first-hand about the dedication, resilience and mindset required to succeed in professional football. Autographs and photographs rounded off a day that will live long in the memory.

Being around first team players and elite athletes helps instil the focus and standards needed to progress, while also raising their aspirations about what they can achieve. We’re really grateful to the players for taking the time to engage with the group, it makes a huge difference hearing directly from those at the top of the game.”

A particularly powerful aspect of the visit was the involvement of Burnley FC Women’s team, whose recent success has captured the imagination of aspiring female footballers across the region.
For the young women on the programme, seeing and interacting with players who have just enjoyed a triumphant season was both motivating and affirming. It highlighted the rapid growth of the women’s game and the increasing opportunities available to female players to pursue football at a high level.
The players’ presence sent a clear message: with hard work, commitment and belief, pathways into competitive and professional football are more accessible than ever before.

Our Football & Education Programme, delivered in partnership with East Lancashire Learning Group, offers talented 16–18-year-olds the chance to combine academic study with elite-level football training.
Based at Nelson and Colne College and Accrington & Rossendale College, the programme supports both personal and athletic development, equipping students with the skills needed to progress into higher education, employment or competitive football and coaching pathways.
