This week, St Mary’s RC Primary School from Sabden, represented Burnley FC in the Community at the EFL Utilita Kids Cup Championship North Finals after winning our local qualifying finals in December!
The tournament was hosted by Huddersfield Town Foundation, and welcomed 12 school teams each representing an EFL Championship club!
Burnley were placed in a group with teams representing Middlesbrough, Stoke City, and the hosts Huddersfield Town. The opening 4 games of the group saw all 4 teams pick up a win each, with Burnley narrowly defeated by Stoke before securing a 1-0 victory over hosts Huddersfield.
Middlesbrough went on to show their quality through the following fixtures and take control of the group, picking up victories against all the other teams in the group to secure top spot, before going all the way to the finals.
Burnley gave a good account of themselves in all their games and came within seconds of securing a draw in their second game against Huddersfield, conceding with almost the last kick of the game.
Unfortunately, they were unable to secure the results needed to progress to the semi-finals, but they represented the club and their school brilliantly throughout the day.
Following their games, the team were presented with their medals by Huddersfield Town players Scott High and Rarmani Edmonds-Green, before playing a final non-competitive fixture against Preston North End, securing a draw.
All the children had a great day representing the club and competing against great teams from across the North of England! We would like to say a huge well done to St Mary’s RC Primary School for giving it their all and for being brilliant representatives of Burnley FC in the Community.
